What can I make?
Short vertical (or square) videos from a longer recording, for YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels. Each Short is its own video under the project's Edited tab and in the Library's Shorts tab. Your original is never changed.
Where do I start?
Open Video Studio in the menu, pick the video under Working on (or Choose another video) and choose Shorts & Reels, or choose Make Shorts in a recording's ⋯ menu in the Library. The preview shows your Brand Kit colour look, and the export minutes are checked before you press Make (a card says when there aren't enough, with Upgrade). It opens its own screen:
- On a computer: the Short plays on the left as it will be made (9:16, with captions and your logo), with your whole recording under it and each moment marked. Davnai's moments are on the right, and your own moments are on a second tab.
- On a phone: the Short plays at the top, the moments are a list underneath, and Make Shorts is at the bottom.
The recording needs a transcript and AI edit suggestions, which are made automatically after upload. While Davnai is still looking, the screen says so and you can choose your own moments meanwhile.
Making the Shorts the AI suggested
Under Found by Davnai, each moment has a title, its length, where it is in the recording and why it was picked. Tap a moment (or ▶) to watch it, tick the ones you want and press Make 3 Shorts (the number follows what you ticked). Moments you've already made show Made, and ones being made show Being made with their progress.
Making a Short from any part you choose
Open Your own, then choose a part in one of three ways:
- Drag across the strip under the video.
- Type Starts and Ends.
- Press From the words, tap the sentence where it starts, then the sentence where it ends.
Press Play it to watch it, then Add it. It's added to Your own, already ticked. A part with words starts and ends on whole sentences. A Short must be between 3 seconds and 3 minutes.
A video nobody speaks in
With no words there are no AI moments and no sentences to pick, so the same screen lets you choose parts by time: drag across the strip or type the times, then Add it (up to 10). Captions are off for these.
Watch a Short before making it
In the Make Shorts window, press ▶ next to any Short to watch exactly what it will contain: its parts one after another, with the pauses and mistakes skipped when Remove pauses and mistakes is on. It stops at the end. Press ■ to close it. It plays in the shape and framing you chose (the one shown in the framing preview); captions and music are added when it's made.
Options for each batch of Shorts
- Shapes (tick one or more): Vertical 9:16 (YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Reels, Facebook Reels), Square 1:1 (Instagram & Facebook feed, LinkedIn), Portrait 4:5 (Instagram & Facebook feed) or Landscape 16:9 (YouTube, X, LinkedIn video). Each Short is made in every shape you tick, all at the same time: 3 Shorts in 2 shapes make 6 videos, named with their shape. Tap a shape's chip to see its framing preview.
- Fitting your picture: Follow the speaker (keeps the face in frame as the person moves), Fill (zoom & crop), Blurred background or Solid background (White or Black), with a preview. With Fill you can zoom and drag the preview to choose the part to keep (the middle by default).
- Remove pauses and mistakes inside the Short: on by default. Uses the cuts from your edit (the last saved version), so Shorts are as tight as your edited video.
- Captions (on by default) with a style and position, and Auto-zoom after cuts (on by default).
- Opener and end card (on by default), in your channel's style: an Opening title of about a second over the start so viewers don't swipe away (Hook words: each Short's own title, big; Logo flash; or Name + show), and an End card of about 2 seconds with your logo and handle (Follow or Watch the full episode; you can change the words). The end card takes the place of an outro chosen under Brand. Switch either off for no opener or end card.
- Look & polish (closed by default): a look, fine-tuning, steady camera, stronger voice clean-up. See looks-and-polish.
- Enhance sound (on by default), Enhance picture (off unless chosen; for dark footage), and Quality (1080p or 720p, the button next to the main button).
You can make up to 10 Shorts at a time. The window shows an estimated time; you can keep working meanwhile.
Finding more Shorts
At the top of Make Shorts, Find more Shorts asks the AI to look again for new moments, different from the ones already listed. New moments appear in the list after a minute or two. It uses one of your monthly AI re-runs (shared with Suggest edits again); the button shows how many are left this month, for example Find more Shorts · 4 free left.
Do Shorts count toward my video minutes?
No. Making Shorts, from suggestions or your own choice, and Find more never count. Only a recording's first processing counts.
Captions, follow the speaker and auto-zoom
Captions (on by default; styles Highlight, Bold, Clean, Boxed; Lower third or Middle), Follow the speaker (one of the framing options) and Auto-zoom after cuts are in the same window. See captions-and-auto-zoom. Part 1, Part 2… is also available: see split-into-parts.
Make Shorts says "Tap to find the best moments first"
A video Davnai hasn't looked at yet (a joined or edited video, for example) has no suggested moments. Tap Make Shorts and Davnai finds them (a minute or two); it opens with the moments when they're ready. The AI Director does the same when you ask it about such a video.
