The options

  • Fill (zoom & crop): fills the whole screen and cuts off the edges.
  • Blurred background: shows the whole picture over a blurred, enlarged copy of itself. Nothing is cut off.
  • Solid background: shows the whole picture on White (the default) or Black. Nothing is cut off.

Each option tells you what it does to *this* video (for example "Cuts 68% of your picture") and the live preview shows the result (parts that would be cut are faded).

Choosing which part Fill keeps (zoom and position)

In Resize, Make Shorts and Split into parts, when Fill is selected the preview has a zoom slider. It goes from Whole (zoomed out: the whole picture shows and a soft blur fills the edges), through Fill (1×) up to 3×. Drag the picture in the preview (or use the arrow keys) to choose which part to keep, for example to keep a speaker who is off to one side. Reset goes back to the middle. Join always keeps the middle.

At 1× a wide (landscape) video in a tall frame only has room to move left and right, because its height already fills the frame. Zoom in to move it up and down as well. The text under the preview says which directions work.

Which one is chosen automatically?

Davnai picks Fill when it cuts little of the picture (25% or less) or when turning a landscape video into vertical or portrait (for example YouTube → TikTok), because that's what those platforms expect. Otherwise it picks Blurred background so nothing is cut off (for example a phone video made square or landscape). You can always change it before starting.

"My video looks zoomed in and cut off"

That's Fill. Make the copy again with Blurred background or Solid background to keep the whole picture, or keep Fill and drag the preview to the part you want (zoom out to 1× to keep as much as possible).

Follow the speaker

In Resize, Make Shorts and Split into parts there is a fourth option, Follow the speaker: Davnai finds the face and moves the frame with it (calmly, without jitter). If no face is found, the frame stays in the middle. See captions-and-auto-zoom. Join doesn't offer it (several clips).
