Voiceover

Help centreVideo editing

Where is it?

Video Studio → pick a video → Voiceover (in the Add to it group) takes you straight there. It lives in Finish my video → Look & sound → Your voice. Press Record my voice (or Open my voiceover when you already have takes). The voiceover screen opens over the page; Done takes you back with everything kept, and Make video mixes your takes into the finished video. Voiceover is for one recording at a time; it isn't offered when several videos are joined.

How do I record?

  1. Allow the microphone when your browser asks (the first time only).
  2. Wear headphones, so the video's sound isn't recorded with your voice.
  3. Tap the bar under the video to move to where you want to start.
  4. Press Record. After the 3-2-1 the video plays (removed parts are skipped, just like the finished video) and your voice is recorded. Press Stop when you're done. The take is saved straight away.

If the video stops for a moment to load (slow internet) or jumps over a removed part, recording pauses with it ("Paused while the video loads…") and carries on when the video does, so your words always stay in step with the picture. Each recording is a take. Record as many as you like (up to 40, each up to 10 minutes).

Do I hear it in the editor's preview?

Yes. In the video editor the preview plays your takes where you recorded them, with your video's own sound lowered (or muted, or kept) as it will be in the made video.

Changing takes

  • ▶ next to a take plays it with the video, so you hear exactly how it will sound.
  • Play with my voice plays the whole video with all your takes.
  • Re-record records that take again from the same moment (the old one is replaced).
  • ✕ deletes a take.
  • Drag a take on the voice bar to move it a little (it can't go on top of another take).
  • A new take recorded over an earlier one replaces it.

How the sound is mixed

  • While you speak, the video's sound: Lower (default; the video's sound goes quiet under your voice and back up after), Mute (only your voice), or Keep (both as they are).
  • Clean up my voice (on by default): less hiss and room echo, and an even volume.
  • Background music (Music tab) lowers under your voice too.
  • While you record, the video's sound already plays at the level you chose (Mute is silent), so you mostly hear yourself.
  • When your video opens with a hook (a moment from later in the video), your voice plays in the hook too wherever you recorded over that moment.

Captions

When Captions are on, your voiceover's words become captions while each take plays (in place of the video's own words, so they never overlap). Captions shown in another language stay as translated and don't include the voiceover. Turn off Captions follow your voice (under Your voice, once you have a take) to keep the video's own words as captions instead.

Fixing a word in your voiceover

Under Your voice (Finish my video → Look & sound), each take is listed as Your voice · Take 1 with its words and the video's own words it plays over (lowered, muted or kept, as you chose).

  • Tap a word to fix it (type the right word and Save; leave it empty to remove it). Captions use the fixed words.
  • Play plays the take over the video.
  • To record a take again, press Open my voiceover, then Re-record next to it.

Microphone problems

  • "Allow the microphone": your browser blocked it. Use the icon next to the address bar to allow the microphone for Davnai, then open the voiceover again.
  • No microphone found: plug one in (or use a headset). With more than one microphone, choose it in the list.
  • The level meter next to the microphone moves when it hears you. If it doesn't, check the right microphone is chosen and not muted.
  • On a phone, use wired or Bluetooth earphones and keep the screen on while recording.
